Obama ads arrive in Burnout Paradise

Of all the advertisements we've ever thought would show up in our ad-enabled video games, we have to admit we never even considered the possibility of political ads. And yet, there they are. The next time you fire up Burnout Paradise, you may notice some new billboard ads advocating Barack Obama's bid for the US presidency. The ads mention that early voting has begun and list the address of an Obama campaign website.

Holly Rockwood, director of corporate communications at Electronic Arts, told GigaOM, "I can confirm that the Obama campaign has paid for in-game advertising in Burnout," adding that the company accepts advertisements from "credible political candidates" and that, just like ads on TV and radio, they don't necessarily reflect the opinions of EA or its employees. Our suggestion for the next candidate to buy some in-game ads: Ed Hermes.

MGS4 360 rumor rears its eyepatch once more

Coming as proof that you just can't keep a good rumor down (just ask the 360 Blu-Ray rumor) IGN is reporting that the longstanding Xbox 360 rumor has surfaced once again. The news comes by way of a report from Morningstar, a Japanese investment research firm, which focused on multiplatform trends. In the report a Konami public relations representative, in regard to Metal Gear Solid 4, was quoted as saying, "We're actively looking into a release for the Xbox 360."

As IGN notes, a single quote hardly adds up to any assurance that MGS4 will see the light of day on 360. This is especially so given that series creator Hideo Kojima has denied the rumor to the point of saying that he's tired of being asked about it in every interview. If somone doesn't make good on this rumor soon, we'll have to start one about MGS4 hitting the next Xbox.

Talisman quietly canceled

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Arcade

While we must admit we've never played the Talisman board game, we are sad to announce that Capcom has canceled the Xbox Live Arcade version of the game. Strange as it may seem, the cancellation was announced not in any official capacity, but in a forum post nearly two months ago. Capcom's Christian Svensson broke the news to an inquitive forum goer, stating that there was a "misfire" at the beginning of development and Capcom had decided not to switch developers because "the costs of moving forward outweighted the potential revenue."

Any hope of the project being resurrected rests with Games Workshop, which once again owns the rights to Talisman.

Madagascar 2 demo escapes to the XBLM jungle

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Marketplace

It's a peculiar thing when a demo of a children's game winds up on Xbox Live Marketplace. On the one hand, we love demos. Of that there can be no doubt. Whether demos inform us of a game's greatness or its complete ineptitude, we are glad of the service they provide. On the other hand, it's hard to foster much interest in a Madagascar 2 demo, but we shall do our best. Let it be known that the game features "entire madcap Madagascar crew," ten levels, and multiplayer mini-games. Whether or not the game will be worthy even as achievement fodder, well, you'll let us know, won't you?

Oh, and the game includes "simulated gambling." We all love that, right?

Crazy Mouse also headed to XBLA this week

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Arcade

Chinese developer Ultizen just announced that their arcade title Crazy Mouse will be releasing to the Xbox Live Arcade on Wednesday, October 15th. And it'll be the first mainland China game to release to the XBLA.

For 400 Microsoft points, Crazy Mouse purchasers will get to experience 30+ levels of mouse scurrying, four player online multiplayer and all the cheese you can consume in one sitting. Not really, but one could speculate that an unlimited cheese eating buffet offer would help the game sell. As long as there's bleu cheese, we're in.

Castle Crashers patch ready to enter MS cert

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Arcade

The long overdue, much anticipated and highly demanded patch for The Behemoth's Castle Crashers is done. You know, the patch that's supposed to fix the game's online issues. Like we said, it's done, just don't rejoice yet. See, it still has to travel on over to Microsoft certification where (GASP!) it could be rejected for some reason. And we don't have to tell you what a rejection from Microsoft will do to the patch's potential release. We shudder to think. Keep those fingers crossed for a patch release in a month's time, that is, if you still care.

Silent Hill: Homecoming Euro release now in '09

Filed under: News, Silent Hill: Homecoming

Even though the latest installment has already released to North American retailers, Europeans will have to wait until February 2009 to get their hands on Konami's Silent Hill: Homecoming.

For reasons unknown (though localization seems to be the culprit), Homecoming has been delayed for release in Europe, pushed back from late October to sometime in February of next year. But don't be too sad Silent Hill'ers, because there's a certain game releasing this week and it should satisfy your horror needs until next year. Promise.

NXE storage solution: Free 512MB memory card or cheap 20GB HDD

Last week, Microsoft informed us that they'd be offering a "storage solution" to Xbox 360 Arcade and Core owners who didn't have 128MBs of storage to install the New Xbox Experience. We now have those storage solution specifics.
Microsoft just launched a new Xbox Storage Upgrade website where Arcade and Core owners can request their storage solution. All you have to do is enter your console's serial number and ID, then the system will check to make sure your console isn't an Elite or Pro. Some are reporting that the system knows if you have a HDD connected and will deny your storage upgrade, so be careful. Once your console is verified to be lacking 128MBs of storage, you'll be given a special offer based on which console you own. The storage solution offers are:

Xbox 360 Fancast 087 -- Gelatin Slingers

Analysts, as you know, are shady figures that gaze at the gaming industry from on high, making wild (or obvious) prognostications and get paid billions of dollars to do it. At least, that's what we thought they were before recording this week's episode of the Fancast. This week, we talk to Jesse Divnich, analyst with Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (or EEDAR as the kids call it). To our great surprise, we discover that industry analysis is a lot more than just throwing Jell-O at the wall and seeing what sticks.

We also look at the latest news and Dustin gives us his impressions of Dead Space. Enjoy.

Gears 2 COG tags hidden around the globe

Filed under: News, Gears of War 2

Microsoft's viral Gears of War 2 Last Day campaign - where codes found on real life metal COG tags are entered online to unlock Gears 2 related media - is heating up, taking the COG tag discovery to fans worldwide.

When first "announced", the Last Day campaign was presented in a way where we figured that the metal COG tags were only given to select media members and the codes (CSIDs) would only unlock various wallpapers, icons and posters on the Last Day website. Well, things are a bit different now (and still confusing), because now COG tags are being hidden all around the globe and it's your mission to find them, enter the codes online and unlock video content on the Last Day website. COG tag locations are randomly popping up on the website in the form of longitude / latitude coordinates, which you can view right here. There's still a bit of confusion and lack of organization, but you can follow all the latest Last Day COG tag news by reading the epicforums, keeping an eye on Gears 2 community manager SixOkay's Twitter and by browsing the official Last Day website. Find those tags!

Downer: The Flood not playable in Halo Wars

So, Joystiq put up an article summing up its impressions of Halo Wars. Sure, there are a lot of gameplay details to glean from the article, and Ensemble Studios explains why there are vehicles in Halo Wars that aren't in any of the Halo games. There are lots of things you can learn in the article, but there is one glaring thing that stands out like Cliff Bleszinski in a rainbow clown wig: the Flood is not playable. Again, the Flood is not playable in Halo Wars.

It's a sad reality, and one we're not willing to accept. Already, we're contorting Ensemble's promise of future DLC to mean that maybe, just maybe the Flood will be added in the future. If not, well, there's always Halo Wars 2.

Rumor: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 headed to the 360 [update]

Filed under: News, Xbox Live Arcade, Rumors

Update: Jonah F. pointed out that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a backwards compatible title, meaning there there's a possibility it will release as an Xbox Original versus the XBLA. We're cheering for the XBLA.

Marvel vs. Capcom
fanboys rejoice! Word on the collective internet street is that the old-school fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will be releasing to the Xbox Live Arcade or as an Xbox Original in the not too distant future. The rumor stems from the game's listing on the ESRB ratings search website where the game was tagged with both Xbox 360 and PS3 descripters. Though, since its discover, the listing has mysteriously disappeared. No matter, we have enough photographic proof (see above) as we need. So, fanboys, how excited would you be for some HD Marvel vs. Capcom 2 XBLA action?

X3F Impressions: Dead Space review

Way back (by internet standards) in September 2007 when EA announced a new space survival horror game game called Dead Space, we couldn't help but roll our eyes in expectation of mediocrity. But over the course of a year, things changed.

Over time, we heard more about its intriguing story, its gruesome dismemberment, stunning visuals and were introduced to the iconic look of main character Isaac Clarke. Suddenly, bloggers and reporters were coming out of E3 giving it praise and were actually excited for EA's survival horror game. That's when a sense of excitement spread as Dead Space's potential was realized. I'm proud to say that after playing through the entire Dead Space campaign, the game delivers a gaming experience as expected. But not based on those early, mediocre 2007 expectations. No, Dead Space delivers on the higher expectations that were set during E3, treating gamers to a solid survival horror experience as was promised.
